Works in Progress

Here's a chance to see some recent stuff.  I will try and keep this page updated.

This is a large commission I am working on for a private collection in Texas.   (Really nice folks!)

The piece will be approximately 65" x 80" x 24" and have lights, (including flashing lightning) and audio.  Proposal 1 has all the dimensions etc.  Only the image changes in the other 2 proposals.  They chose #3.

This piece will eventually have to be transported via van to Texas.  I must design it so that it breaks into two pieces to fit into the vehicle and through doors.

Painting Begins:

One of the interesting things about this piece for me is that it's unlike most of my other stuff, which is built to be pretty abstract until the viewer faces the piece at a 90 degree angle and the imagery snaps into a somewhat sensible perspective.  This piece will hang in a large entry hall on the second floor level where it will be viewed primarily from below and from the upper left side (a stairway balcony).  Because of the viewing angles, building the piece makes the 2D/3D issues I normally face in my art much more tricky to deal with.  Adding to the dilemma, I am dealing with a curved surface for the first time with no "framing edge" to play with!!  Pretty fun "Art Adventure" if you ask me!

The current size of the piece is 70" X 80" X 18".  The depth dimension will change in a couple of days when I finish all the base painting and start to add the outer layers.  The translucent clouds will likely come first, then the beach grass, and then the umbrella.  After that the electronics will be added.  Much of the circuit building will likely occur concurrent to building and painting the outer layers.  The Plexiglas clouds will be curved to roughly conform to the curve of the painting and canted slightly outward at the top.  They will be painted to allow light to pass only in certain areas (for "in cloud" lightning effects!).
